Laura Franzmann's work is characterized by a search for contact zones. In her research-based, formally and aesthetically sound practice, she exposes several of these contact zones that mark flowing transitions between the human and the other-than-human, between the inside and the outside. Designed bodies or objects that were created as a counterpart to ourselves make our own construction conscious. In her installations and sculptures, this construction is explored through the materiality, the contemplations of touch and physical proximity enlivens. The intimacy and merging of different self-images is examined in her work, for example with quilted ornaments. The process of sewing becomes a metaphor for the connection between culture, self-image and its relationship to the physical body.
In her sculptures, objects and drawings, which are often textile-based, polytemporality, opposites and simultaneities are manifested in the material and binary attributions and unambiguous codes are questioned.
